2.4.4 Spills & Mixing of Product
The best way to avoid a spill or mixing of products is to check all the available means of identifying the correct storage tank in which to put the product. Examples: Ask the store manager, study the paperwork for the load, and check for tank color-coding.
IMPORTANT: WHEN IN DOUBT, CALL YOUR TERMINAL MANAGER OR DISPATCHER. Find out the correct information—NEVER GUESS.
Handling Products Mixes
- Immediately shut off all valves.
- If you discover an accidental mix of product, especially gasoline into Kerosene, stop all sales of product out of that tank immediately by whatever means necessary (ex: locking – use tie straps, bagging or blocking pump). Notify the clerk or manager as quickly as possible.
- Call your Terminal Manager or Dispatcher for specific directions.
**Extremely Important**
Gauge all tanks and record readings accurately.
Handling Product Spills
- Shut off all valves.
- Immediately, clear the hazardous area of all unauthorized persons.
- Eliminate any source of fire.
- Use the oil spill materials in your truck specified to contain the spill.
- Call your Terminal Manager or Dispatcher.
- Call the appropriate emergency authorities (fire, police, etc.) if necessary.
- Keep people away from the contaminated area.
- Do not discuss the incident with anyone except your Terminal Manager, dispatcher, or someone in a supervisory capacity at Reliable Tank Line.
- Cooperate with emergency personnel but do NOT endanger yourself.
Take the guess-work out of using tank charts
The Using Tank Charts short-course on our Safety Culture platform helps take the guess-work out of fuel deliveries into both underground or above-ground storage tanks. The lessons are set-up to benefit to BOTH new and experienced professional fuel haulers in avoiding overfills.
