A-8 Pre-Trip Checklist

  1. Log into Trimble Instinct tablet and start Pre-trip.
  2. Raise hood and check fluids, belts, steer axle suspension components and brakes, look for any visible fluid leaks or damage.
  3. Start engine, looks for fluid leaks and listen for auditable air leaks. Close hood.
  4. Activate light test system and check tractor for inoperable lights.
  5. Visually check lug nut indicators to verify no loose lug nuts, and air pressure in steer tires.
  6. Check glad hand connections and hoses for abrasions or spots on deck plate they may be touching.
  7. On the tractor, check lug nut indicators for loose lug nuts, and tire pressure in drive tires, brake hardware, audible air leaks, 5th Wheel and skid plate bolts for tightness, verify 5th wheel is latched and locked.
  8. Listen for audible air leaks and look for fluid leaks on drive axles.
  9. On the trailer, check lug markers for loose lugs, brake and suspension hardware, audible air leaks, and light function on trailer.
  10. Verify all components are secure on trailer: cones, bucket, hoses (at least 5 working hose straps with no knots).
  11. Verify compartments are empty (see A-7: Troubleshooting Techniques), compartment markers are functional.
  12. Verify there are no visual leaks or damage on the trailer.

Step 7 (above): No gaps between 5th wheel and skid plate

When verifying the 5th wheel is securely latched and locked on the kingpin, DO NOT proceed to operate the unit if there is a gap between the trailer skid plate and the 5th wheel on the tractor. If you see light from the other side (in the case of the reference photo), OR rust on the 5th wheel (as shown), DO NOT operate the vehicle UNTIL the proper coupling is made. In the example shown, the kingpin is not fully engaged with the locking jaw mechanism - very dangerous.
