Standard Procedures

2.4.3 Preventing & Handling Fires

Considering the products transported by Reliable Tank Line, great care must be taken to prevent the occurrence of fires. In the event of a fire, proper techniques must be used to extinguish and/or control it.

“No Smoking” rules must be observed at all times. The engine and cargo tank must be checked for oil and fuel leaks. The cab must be kept free of oily rags, paper and other debris that can cause a fire. A fire extinguisher is in each truck and trailer. If used, contact your Terminal Manager, Dispatcher, or Shop Foreman to have refilled and/or replaced.

Tire Fires

Always try to stop wherever water is accessible to put out the fire. If water is not available, shovel dirt or sand onto the tire to smother the fire. Fire extinguishers normally will not extinguish a tire fire but may work if used soon enough.

Engine Fires

Open the hood as little as possible. Use a fire extinguisher.

Electrical Fires

Disconnect the tractor’s battery cable as quickly as possible. Use fire extinguisher on electrical fires.

Oil & Gasoline Fires

Do not use water. Use a fire extinguisher.

Product Fires

The products we handle are classified as “flammable.” Check with the Terminal Manager or Dispatcher for additional information on proper handling of emergencies involving specific products.
